Visceral Fat After 40: What It Is, How to Measure It, and How to Lose It
By Coach Matt Weaver · Founder, Results Transformation Center · Updated October 2026 · 3 min read
Quick answer
Visceral fat is the deep abdominal fat stored around your organs. You cannot see it on a bathroom scale, but a body composition scan can estimate it. The most effective ways to reduce it after 40 are regular strength training, overall physical activity, a protein-forward diet with fewer ultra-processed foods and less alcohol, and better sleep.

There are two kinds of belly fat. The kind you can pinch sits under the skin. The kind you cannot pinch sits deeper, wrapped around your liver, intestines and other organs. That second kind — visceral fat — is the one that matters most for how you age.

What Is Visceral Fat?
Visceral fat is fat stored inside the abdominal cavity around the organs. It is metabolically active, meaning it releases substances that affect inflammation and how your body handles blood sugar and fats. Higher levels of visceral fat are associated with increased risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease and other metabolic conditions.
Why Does Visceral Fat Increase After 40?
- Muscle loss lowers daily energy use, making fat gain easier
- Hormonal shifts — in women, falling estrogen moves fat storage toward the abdomen; in men, declining testosterone has a similar effect
- Less activity and more sitting
- Poor sleep and chronic stress
- Alcohol and ultra-processed foods
How Do You Measure Visceral Fat?
See your numbers in 60 seconds
A Muscle Protection Scan shows what is actually happening in your body. A coach texts you today to pick a time.
Claim My Muscle Protection ScanThe scale cannot see it. A tape measure gives a rough clue (waist circumference). To actually estimate visceral fat, you need a body composition test:
BIA scans
such as the Bio Age Scan by EVOLT — quick, non-invasive and easy to repeat every few weeks
DEXA
more detailed, usually at a clinic and paid
MRI or CT
the most precise, generally used only in medical or research settings
At Results TC, every member gets a visceral fat reading on their free first scan, then re-scans to track change.
How to Lose Visceral Fat After 40: What Works
Strength train at least twice a week
Building muscle increases the energy you burn every day and improves how your body handles blood sugar. Strength training is the core of every Results TC program for this reason.
Move more throughout the day
Walking, cycling and other activity add up. Combined with strength training, they support visceral fat reduction.
Eat protein at every meal and cut the ultra-processed foods
Protein helps you keep muscle while losing fat. Fewer sugary drinks, refined snacks and alcohol make a measurable difference for most people.
Sleep and manage stress
Short sleep and chronic stress are associated with more abdominal fat storage. Recovery is part of the plan.
Do not crash diet
Very aggressive dieting often takes muscle with the fat. You may get smaller and still end up softer. Protect muscle while you lose fat.
Can You Spot-Reduce Belly Fat With Ab Exercises?
Myth vs Fact
No. Crunches strengthen the abdominal muscles but do not specifically burn the fat over or under them. Visceral fat comes down with whole-body changes: strength training, activity, nutrition and sleep.
