Strength Training for Women Over 40: Menopause, Belly Fat & Bone Density (Sacramento & Reno)
By Coach Matt Weaver · Founder, Results Transformation Center · Updated October 2026 · 4 min read
Quick answer
Strength training is the most effective exercise for women over 40 because it rebuilds the muscle that declines in perimenopause and menopause, helps reduce visceral belly fat, and loads bone to support density. Aim for at least two progressive, coached strength sessions a week, and measure muscle and visceral fat, not just weight.

The belly that showed up out of nowhere. The sleep that broke. The weight that will not move the way it used to. The body you do not quite recognize, even when the scale cooperates.
If you are a woman in your 40s, 50s or 60s, none of this is a personal failure. Your body changed, and nobody handed you a plan for it. Your doctor may have given you a pamphlet. The fitness industry handed you another spin class. The real lever — for almost all of it — is strength training.

Why Does Belly Fat Increase in Menopause?
As estrogen declines in perimenopause and menopause, the body tends to store more fat around the abdomen instead of the hips and thighs. Much of that is visceral fat, the deep fat around the organs. The scale may barely change while your waistline does, because you may be losing muscle and gaining fat at the same time.
Eating less, on its own, often makes this worse: you lose weight, but you also lose the muscle that keeps your metabolism up. A body composition scan shows what the scale cannot — how much visceral fat you carry and how much muscle you have.
Why Is Strength Training the Best Exercise After 40 for Women?
Strength training addresses the four problems women over 40 report most:
The midsection that appeared overnight.
Building muscle raises the energy your body uses every day and supports visceral fat reduction.
The strength that quietly left.
Muscle loss is measurable and reversible with progressive load.
The bone density you cannot feel leaving.
Bone responds to load. Walking and cardio help heart health but do relatively little for bone.
The 3pm energy crash.
Muscle stores glycogen. More muscle means steadier energy between meals.

Claim My Muscle Protection ScanYes — the evidence is strongest for heavier, supervised, progressive strength training. The LIFTMOR trial (Watson et al., Journal of Bone and Mineral Research, 2018) found that eight months of supervised high-intensity resistance and impact training improved bone density at the spine and hip in postmenopausal women with low bone mass, without increasing injuries. The key word is supervised: technique and progression matter more than ever.
